Newton Solney Church of England Infant School.

Newton Solney is a Church of England Aided Infant School which means that we have strong links with our local village church, St.Mary’s, and we are part of the Derby Diocese.
As a church school we strongly promote Christian and British values. The children have chosen the values of:-
Friendliness, Respectfulness, Responsibility and Kindness
Many more Christian values are explored within these ideas at a level that the children understand e.g. Truthfulness and Forgiveness.
Newton Solney serves a large geographic area and as an inclusive school we equally welcome people from other faiths and those of no faith.

Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools. (SIAMS)

We are very proud of our SIAMS inspection outcomes when many aspects of a church school are inspected including Collective Worship and the teaching of Religious Education.
In our July 2017 inspection we were graded as an Outstanding church school.

“Newton Solney is a welcoming and nurturing Christian family community where young pupils grow in confidence and achieve well. This provides a firm foundation for the next stage of their learning.”

Collective Worship.

Collective Worship is an integral part of our school day. It is a time when the whole school come together to praise God and learn about our world and people through the teachings of the Bible, stories and drama. Each day there is a song and prayers allowing children time to reflect on what they have heard that day.

Children are encouraged to take an active part in Collective Worship and regularly read out prayers that they have written, take part in drama and contribute ideas and thoughts.

Religious Education.

Religious Education is taught for about an hour a week to each class by the class teacher.

The Derbyshire Agreed Syllabus is followed with emphasis placed on the celebrations of Christmas and Easter each year. We also use “Understanding Christianity”. Children are taught to think about the Bible, stories that Jesus told, the Creation, Festivals, Places of Worship and Inspiring people and how these themes relate to themselves. Children will also learn about other faiths in particular Judaism and Islam. We take the children on visits to our village church, St.Mary’s, and we have had visits from Derby Open Centre.

Each year we hold an RE day when the whole school, in mixed age groups, take part in RE based activities. Themes have included Advent, The Lord’s Prayer and Prayer.

Our Year 2 Leavers Assembly always has a religious theme when children re-tell a Bible story they have been studying in song and drama. The children lead the whole service confidently and enthusiastically.

Every two years the whole school takes part in a Nativity themed Christmas Production with Year 2 taking the main leading parts.
